2015 Christmas Gift Ideas

I honestly cannot believe I am even writing this post already... it feels like only a couple of months ago that I was pulling together ideas for Christmas 2014, but a year has flown by already. It's definitely starting to feel very festive with stores everywhere displaying their seasonal decor. I've spent the last few weeks thinking about which items to suggest as gift ideas this year and am quite excited to share!

Current Skincare Loves: Morning and Night

As my last post featured my bare face, I thought it would be fitting to this week lead on with a bit about the skincare products I am currently using. Generally I'm happy to spend a bit more $$$ on skincare as there is definitely a difference between drugstore and high end products in terms of ingredients. There are some really fantastic mid-tier brands that work really well without breaking the bank though, and I'm a big fan of French pharmacy brands which I've mentioned time and time again throughout the history of my blogging life!

I have been using all of these items consistently for a while now so I feel well-informed to vouch for their performance. I love this very fitting quote by David Khoo, Olay Skincare Scientist who says: “Make good skincare a twice daily habit and don’t wait till summer is here. Even the best skincare products take time to work (and you should be a little sceptical about products that promise dramatic results in 7 days or less), 2-4 weeks is a reasonable time to expect to see results.” So without further ado, I'll jump into it!

Growing up, I have always been very self-conscious of my appearance, particularly my skin. In my early high school days, I suffered from really terrible acne on my forehead and around my nose area. I grew a fringe for many years to hide my forehead, which in hindsight was an awful decision as the oils from my hair would have done nothing to help my skin breathe. I also picked at the pimples around my nose area, which now, years later still leaves visible scarring and redness. It's no surprise then that I began dabbling with foundation and concealer from a young age, born from my insecurities associated with puberty. About 4 or 5 years ago, I went to a dermatologist intending to try Roaccutane, a very potent acne treatment as I honestly felt I needed it, however the specialist recommended I try the pill first. As a result, I was on the pill for about 2 years and luckily it really worked well in clearing up breakouts. Though still prone to the odd pimple here and there every few weeks, thankfully for the most part my skin has been fairly manageable since I came off it. As I mentioned though, I'm still very conscious of the redness and scarring that now serve as a reminder of my teenage years. One day I would love to feel comfortable enough to leave the house without an inch of makeup, but right now my bare minimum is concealer around the nose to neutralise the redness. Personal story aside, today I thought I would share a more full coverage look using some of the products I have been loving, and show what a difference makeup can make, especially for my confidence.

At Home Spa Bath!

It only took about 23 years but I finally have access to a bath tub which you may have seen a sneaky peek of here. I have given away so many gifted bath products over the years so was extremely excited to be able to keep and actually use my first ever Lush bath bomb a couple of months ago. This cute bunny one was part of their limited edition Easter treats earlier this year.

New In: Kate Moss by Rimmel Nude Collection

Kate Moss and Rimmel have been working together for a number of years now, releasing some of the most well-loved drugstore products in the beauty world. I remember loving the original Lasting Finish by Kate Moss lipsticks in the black and red packaging which are still a great staple, especially for those just beginning to dabble with makeup. Even though I don't reach for nudes regularly, I just could not resist the pale pink Nude Collection which was released in September.

COLAB by Ruth Crilly Dry Shampoo

I have always been a user of dry shampoo and during the last 40% off haircare items sale at Priceline, I was very excited to spot COLAB on the shelves. COLAB is a line of dry shampoos developed by Ruth Crilly of A Model Recommends fame that I have heard much about from British beauty experts.

Spring Lip Favourites

Now that it seems Spring has officially hit Melbourne, I've finally been able to pull out some brighter colours from my lipstick drawers. I don't get much use out of lipsticks at all in Winter because of my dry and peeling lips problem (refer to here) so in this transition season I like to ease myself back into it with some really hydrating products that still inject some colour into my life.

I'm Lactose Intolerant?!

A bit different to my usual posts... but today I wanted to talk about my recently official 'diagnosis' of lactose intolerance. More writing and less pretty pictures today. In the last 12 months or so, I came to realise that my constant tummy grumbling and bloating was not because I was always hungry, and in fact, not normal at all! I don't know why but I always just put it down to not eating the right amount of food, and never thought to consider if it could be something in my actual diet that was affecting my stomach. A friend at work is lactose intolerant and we used to chat about it quite often when people were making coffees in the kitchen, and that's when it got me thinking, leading to a bit of research.

The Struggle Returns: Dry, Flakey Lips

Last Winter I had a terrible time with my lips being dry and flakey, and really struggled to find some quality lip balms that actually helped to heal and nourish my lips. I kept up my routine in the warmer months in the hopes that I would escape such a battle this year, but sadly I did not come out unscathed. I tried a couple of new products this year and thought I would round up my favourites, both high end and drugstore. It's now officially Spring so I am hoping things will start returning to a more manageable stage now, so that I can whip out some bright lip colours!

Two Birds Cafe, Collingwood

Brunch is my favourite meal of the day by far, and my weekends are precious because I need to pick wisely on where I decide to try. One of my lovely friends' sister and brother-in-law have just re-opened up Two Birds Cafe, tucked away just off Gertrude and Smith St in Collingwood, so it made my weekly decision very easy last weekend.

Real Techniques Bold Metals: Worth The Hype?

In recent weeks, you may have seen sneak peeks of the latest addition to the Real Techniques line by Sam and Nic Chapman of the YouTube channel, pixiwoo. The highly anticipated Bold Metals collection is undoubtedly stunning aesthetically (with a price tag to match), but are they as good as they look?

Zomato / SOS Charcoal Seafood Restaurant Launch

If you think of yourself as a bit of a foodie like me, then you'll probably be aware that the Urbanspoon app has been taken over by Zomato, which is an already established and very similar service headquartered in India, but with a presence globally. As part of the Australian launch, Zomato host a number of events where eating is the main activity (yes!!) and I had the pleasure of attending the opening of new restaurant SOS Charcoal Seafood on Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn.

Recent Empties #2

I've had a bag full of empty bottles and tubes lying around for a while now so I thought it was about time I gathered them all together into one post. I have a bit of everything including makeup, skincare and hair but I'll start off with the makeup items as I never seem to have many of those..

A Special Evening: FOTN + OOTN

I'm back!! I did not mean to have a mini writing break, however I moved house about 3 weeks ago and my disorganised self did not get around to queuing any decent posts in the lead up. I do have several lined up now though so if I manage to polish them all up, it'll be back to weekly content hopefully!

In late June I spent a very special evening with my other half, to celebrate half a decade of memories together. We decided to dine at No35 in the Sofitel on Collins St, which had been on my list of places to try for at least 2 years!

An Intimate Evening with Impulse: Fragrance Education Dinner

Last week I had the privilege to attend an intimate evening hosted by the Impulse Fragrance and their publicity team. You may remember that I shared a post here when they first relaunched late last year. To refresh your memory, the new scents were created by globally renowned fragrance developer Ann Gottlieb, who has also crafted some of the world's best loved scents including Marc Jacobs Daisy and Christian Dior J'Adore.

My Latest Obsession: Skincare in a Capsule

I am generally fairly conservative with my skincare products and like to stick to what I know. I don't usually stray too far from Kiehl's, Avene, La Roche-Posay, Lancome or Clinique but the girls looking after MonoDermà in Australia managed to convince me to give the brand a go. I was more curious than anything and I have to say that I have not been this intrigued by a new product in a long time!

Strictly Ballroom the Musical

I've been hooked to seeing musicals since I saw my first two last year (Wicked and Les Miserables), and Lion King in March this year. When I was given the opportunity to see Strictly Ballroom the Musical through the lovely ladies at Nuffnang, I was all over it. I love Baz Lurhmann's eccentric style and I actually studied the film as part of my English curriculum back in high school. You know when you're forced to analyse something over and over, and by the end you absolutely cannot stand it? Well, that was all I could remember about Strictly Ballroom. But 7 years down the track, I was actually quite eager to see a production that I had had such fond (...) memories of.

Weekend Away: Country Escape

Over the Easter long weekend I was so thankful to be able to escape to a lovely winery in the Macedon Ranges for some much needed down time. The weather was beautiful and the countryside was extra quiet with many towns closing over the Easter period.
